Four years of Pilbara drought

December 2010 sees the Pilbara region enter its fourth year of drought, which has also had dramatic effect on Wittenoom Gorge. It has been several years since Joffrey Creek has flowed through the gorge, and the surrounding hills reflect the dried and yellowed spinifex. there are still a handful of pools shaded under towering rock faces here the water is still cool and clear, a beautiful place to swim in the searing northern heat. Unfortunately the lack of water in the regio has seen straying cattle enter the gorge and pollute some of the swimming holes.

With mining companies moving closer and closer to the gorge , it becomes increasingly vital that this area is preserved and awareness that very little of the Pilbera is being conserved and set aside for us to visit and enjoy. now is the time to put pressure on the Government and mining companies to clean up the toxic mess in the gorge and set this area side for preservation. It is stunningly beautiful, retains fresh water pools, flora and fauna and a unique landscape.

Come and see this amazing region and make your own judgement.

note, there are no facilities at the town of Wittenoom and be aware to use caution near the asbestos tailings near the mine site.
